Mannequins
Photographing display mannequins and their environments has been a pursuit of mine since I started doing photography. In 1974 I was invited by a friend and fellow university student to photographically document the then brand-new Mexico City metro for their thesis project. Inside the metro there was an underground shopping mall, and one storefront in particular had a rather amusing male mannequin with a beard sporting a polyester suit with the caption “MUY ELEGANTE”. I had fun doing his “portrait”, and that sparked my interest in the subject - most importantly the human qualities of our alter-egos that look out on us from behind the glass and attempt to catch our attention as we pass.
This is one of the projects I have pursued the most intensely over the past few years.
